About: SASHYA JAY Sashya Jay is Australia’s most recognised Brazilian Samba Creative Director and Performing Artist. She is an internationally acclaimed Choreographer, Passista and Samba Professora endorsed by Carlinhos Salgueiro. Director of Rio Projekt, Samba Internacional and the Australia Samba Congress. Sashya is an official Passista (professional Samba dancer) for three of Rio’s top Samba schools: Paraiso do Tuiuti, Academicos do Salgueiro and Império Serrano and she parades annually in the elite division of Rio Carnaval. Sashya is one of only 4 artists worldwide officially accredited by Carlinhos Salgueiro (Rio’s famous King of Samba) to teach his signature style. She is amongst the stellar line-up of Samba Instructors at the annual Brasil Samba Congress in Rio and the International Samba Congress in Los Angeles. She runs regular courses and teaches workshops across Australia and internationally. Sashya has choreographed an impressive array of stage shows as well as live and televised performances across Australia. She won the “Best Choreography” award at the Sydney Mardi Gras 2015 and Runner Up the following year. In 2016, Sashya also choreographed the Brazilian performances for the official “Welcome Home” events for the Australian Olympic Team in Sydney and Melbourne and the half-time performance for the Cronulla Sharks “Rio Round”. Sashya has featured at major Brazilian events in Australia for over a decade, with nationally televised appearances on Channel 7, Channel 10, Channel 9 and shows such as The X Factor. She has also performed with renowned artists such as Carlinhos Salgueiro, Evelyn Bastos, Kellyn Rosa, Sergio Mendes, Jason Derulo, James Arthur, Todd McKenney and Chong Lim. Sashya’s forte in Brazilian Samba has evolved through immersing herself in the culture as well as training and performing with the top Samba artists and aficionados in Brasil, the USA and Australia since 2005. Please welcome! Special guest! Rainha Do Samba USA 2015 I (Queen of Samba USA) - Nicolea Pettis to this year's 2018 National Samba Queen and King Competition! We are excited to have her join us as special guest teacher / workshop instructor.
About: Nicolea Pettis found her love for perfoming early in life. At the age of 6 she performed with the Orange County Black Actors Theater Kids Division. She was the youngest member of the group. A quiet child by nature, she came to life on stage and surprised everyone. That is when, as the saying goes, "A Star Was Born." Nicolea was crowned Samba Queen USA 2015 in October 2015 at the national Samba King and Queen competition in Arizona. Nicolea is currently a dancer in the highly acclaimed Raiz Brazil Dance Company under the direction of Jonia McClenney. Nicolea continues to perfect her craft. She loves to perform and share the joy of Samba! Please welcome! Special guest! Angelique Marquand Starks to this year's 2018 National Samba Queen and King Competition! About: Samba Performers is comprised of some of the most talented dancers around. Founded in 2008 by Angelique Starks, Samba Performers has quickly become one of the liveliest and most notable Samba acts in the country. Samba Performers director Angelique Starks started her career as a show girl for David Cassidy's acclaimed Las Vegas production "EFX." Shortly afterwards she discovered the art of Capoeira while living in New York and began training under the instruction of Mestre Caxias as well as under the supervision of Mestre Boneco in Los Angeles. Embracing her newfound passion of Brazilian culture, Angelique excelled quickly over the years and her love and devotion to the arts soon reached a level to where she was ready to begin teaching students of her own. Returning to the state where she was born and raised, Angelique currently conducts samba classes in her brand new studio in central Phoenix. |
